Tourism companies to get one movement permit during lockdown

  Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) has revealed that movement permits for the private sector tourism vehicles shall be restricted to one vehicle per company.   The revelation is made in reference to the presidential directives announced on 18th June, 2021 to curb the surge in COVID-19 cases in the country. Uganda is grappling with a second wave of the deadly Coronavirus that has so far claimed lives of 660 Ugandans. On Friday, President Yoweri Museveni announced several stringent measures to contain spread of the virus including ban on social gatherings, public transport among others but allowed movement of tourists across all destinations in the country. According to the statement released on 21st June 2021, by UTB Chief Executive Officer, Lily Ajarova, all stakeholders in the tourism sector with melted and compelling special movement needs shall henceforth submit their requests for movement permits to UTB. EU approves visit to Uganda Parks

Tourism has suffered huge losses since the country was shut down Officials from the European Union have declared Uganda’sparks as officially open to tourism after making symbolic visits at the weekend. The Ugandan tourism industry is now hoping the government will open the country’s airspace soon, to allow flights carrying foreign visitors. Tourism, which earns Uganda $1.6bn (£1.2bn) a year, has suffered huge losses since the country was shut down in March to contain coronavirus. Travel by road and air was banned, but hotels which were forced to close are open again. The reopening of national parks is another step towards the recovery of tourism, but the industry needs airlines flying again to bring in foreign visitors. Uganda’s airport and aviation authorities have issued measures to keep travellers and staff safe, such as screening passengers and their luggage for the virus. Botswana parliament rejects call to arm game rangers

  Botswana’s National Assembly has rejected a call to rearm its game rangers that was driven by a surge in rhinoceros poaching in recent years. Guns were taken away from the rangers in 2018, but an opposition party lawmaker had moved a motion to rearm the wildlife officers. Botswana’s legislators voted against a proposal brought before the National Assembly by an opposition member of Parliament, Kgoborego Nkawana. The motion to rearm wildlife officers was defeated Friday, with all ruling party members voting against it. Nkawana had argued recent poaching incidents necessitated equipping the rangers with guns. “It is a big loss,” Nkawana said. “This would have been an opportunity to save our rhinos and other animals, particularly up in the north. Maybe over time we can see how we can address the government over that issue.” Most of the poaching takes place in the thickets of Botswana’s vast Okavango Delta.
